The Era of AI in Design: Why Unlimited Design Services Still Matter

TL;DR
  • AI has simplified design workflows and made them faster.
  • But AI isn’t replacing all designers. AI is replacing outdated design workflows.
  • Amidst that, an AI-ready unlimited design service feels much more valuable than ever.

Will AI replace designers? That’s an ongoing debate. A couple of years ago, the answer was clear – with those extra fingers and uncanny elements, AI-generated images felt like nothing more than a thing of novelty. But things have changed and the role of AI in design has changed.

AI image generators can generate photorealistic shots, follow prompts precisely and even excel at text rendering. With that, the decision becomes unclear. No wonder some teams out there believe that AI can handle all their design needs. There comes the question – if AI can design, why do we still need design services at all? Do we really need to invest in unlimited design services and pay a monthly fee for brand designs? We’re answering that today.

What Our Clients are Saying

Before we get into the arguments, the data, and the nuances of where AI design tools genuinely shine and where they fall short, it is worth hearing from the people who have actually encountered this question in practice. KIMP works with businesses that have tried AI design tools, assessed them honestly, and made an informed decision about what they actually need. Here is what two of them had to say.

“For anyone thinking they don’t need graphic designers in the age of AI, you should reconsider. The experience and professionalism of real graphic designers is unmatched. I’ve been very happy with Kimp and highly recommend them!”

Dustin Danelius

“Even with the onset of AI generation, there is still significant value in knowing your requests will be completed with 100% accuracy and on point, by real designers.  I often brainstorm with ai image generation, then send the mockups to Kimp for professional design, which always includes variations of all necessary files, as well as the original design file to make future edits yourself. Huge value!”

Thomas Curtis

Both clients came to KIMP having already engaged with AI design tools. This is not a case of businesses unfamiliar with the alternative. They knew what AI could do, and they still chose professional design support.

And these clients describe a workflow that is common among most users today – using AI to brainstorm, then bringing a professional design team in to execute. That is not a rejection of AI, nor a rejection of professional design support. It is the smart way to make both work together.

Because the businesses getting it wrong are not choosing between AI and design services. They are replacing one with the other and discovering the cost of that decision slowly. But by then, the real damage is done.

AI Text-to-Image Tools Have Evolved Tremendously

We cannot deny the fact that we’ve come a long way from the clumsy designs that AI text-to-image tools were generating just a few years ago. Today’s tools can generate realistic subjects and follow prompts with respect to the composition, camera angles, and other details.

So, it doesn’t make sense to dismiss them entirely. That would be a wasted opportunity. A few key benefits of AI in design include:

Better text rendering

About a year ago, here’s what Gemini could give us based on a vague prompt: “an illustrated storybook page with a few lines of text from the story.”

And this was what Gemini gave us recently.

Same prompt but better results. Notice the improved details, and most importantly, the enhanced text rendering.

Consistency across characters

A few, if not all, AI image generators today can preserve consistency across characters or subjects in designs. This was not possible in the past, but it is now and so you can definitely use AI in design to generate avatars and use them across designs.

Platforms have introduced sophisticated features that help lock in reference systems, like Midjourney’s Omni References, which help preserve character consistency. These features let you upload reference images for subjects and maintain consistency.

Enhanced speed in generation and concept testing

Before AI, brainstorming a brand-new visual meant hours of manual sketching or hunting through stock libraries for mood boards. Today, AI allows you to test color theories, layout structures, and lighting variations in seconds. It acts as an instant canvas for raw ideas, letting marketing teams visualize concepts quickly and effectively.

In short, AI tools have successfully automated the “first draft” and have become incredibly powerful additions to the design workflow.

What AI Tools Still Can’t Do But Unlimited Design Services Can

Prompting vs the design brief

We fed the same prompt across three different image generators. The prompt was simple.

“Design premium packaging for a specialty coffee brand called “Altitude Roast”. Include a 250g coffee bag, label system, logo placement, flavor information, and sustainable packaging materials. Photorealistic mockup displayed in a professional studio setting.”

Here are the results we got on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Ideogram.

Visually stunning, no doubt! But all these AI tools failed at something – establishing the context.

A good designer, in contrast, would start by asking questions – about the business, about the audience, the competitors and the goals of the campaign.

With unlimited design services, for instance, the process always starts with a design brief. No matter what type of design you need, you start with a design brief where you provide your designer(s) with context.

KIMP makes it easier with the AI design brief that captures your requirements clearly and quickly.

Better context means more meaningful designs, not just good-looking designs. Yes, when you use AI in design, you can still improve the results by providing better context but that means learning to prompt better and the results depend entirely on your prompt. But when there is a designer asking you questions to provide better perspectives and enhance the clarity in your design, things work better.

Originality and the much-needed brand differentiation

We ran an experiment to understand how original and unique designs can be when generated with AI tools. We used the same prompt on two different instances of ChatGPT – no memory saved, no prior context, just the same prompt on two random instances of ChatGPT and here are the results we got.

Such a level of similarity should scare you, especially if you are trying to build a memorable brand relying solely on AI as your designer. We know the odds of your competitor using the same prompt as yours are fairly low, but can you risk that? Especially with something as crucial as your brand identity?

In contrast, unlimited design services with their team of experienced designers with expertise in designing brand identities for various industries bring fresh perspectives when interpreting your requirements. The chances of two human designers interpreting the same brief the same way are much lower than two different AI tools used in two different corners of the world generating similar-looking results.

So, while AI in design can be a good starting point to generate references for your brand identity, visual references for your designers to understand your idea better, they are not “enough” to create truly original designs that are unique to your brand.

The much-needed human touch

When debating between using AI to entirely automate your design workflow and working with an unlimited design service, ask yourself – are you designing just for the algorithm or for a human audience? If it’s for the latter, there is one aspect of design you just cannot ignore – the human element. Brands with the best designs are those that are able to add an emotional depth to their designs. These are brands that are able to connect with their audience through designs that evoke an emotional response.

Now that’s an area where AI falls short. For instance, we took some AI-generated designs and our designers tweaked them, with some small yet significant updates. These could be in the form of colors, contrasts, better typography decisions for instance.

No matter how small they might appear, it’s details like these that differentiate your brand and ensure that your designs actually resonate with your audience.

Evidently, the difference is simple – designers know, understand and intentionally apply design principles. In contrast, AI works based on data, it matches patterns, it reverse engineers based on training data and does not “understand” design principles. And that shows in designs representing a brand.

When working with an unlimited design service, you have the advantage of requesting multiple creative versions of the design for the same brief. The designers in your team:

  • Know and use negative space intentionally to draw attention to elements
  • Apply visual hierarchy for clarity
  • Use unique perspectives or even the scale of elements to make people stop and take a second look

And with services like KIMP, where you work with a dedicated design team, your designers start understanding your brand better with every project they execute. This understanding works in your favor.

Ownership, licensing and legal concerns

When you pull a design from an AI tool, who actually owns it? The honest answer is, nobody. If you are using purely AI-generated visuals to build your website, run your ad campaigns, or package your products, you are stepping into a massive legal gray area that can put your business at risk.

Remember that when using AI in design, the generated designs are not automatically unique and not automatically yours in the same way a commissioned illustration is.

No matter how great a design looks, a lack of legal protection ensures that your brand assets are vulnerable to anyone who wants to copy them.

Evidently, the difference is simple, professional design services prioritize asset security and legal compliance. In contrast, AI works based on public data. It scrapes training models and currently does not work based on commercial licensing rules and therefore does not provide protectable intellectual property.

In contrast, with unlimited design services, you get:

  • Full ownership of every single custom design built for your brand.
  • Fully compliant stock assets and fonts that are legally licensed, shielding your business from infringement claims.
  • Raw, layered source files (.AI, .PSD, Figma) at no extra cost so you can scale and edit your assets whenever you need.

This can be a huge plus, considering that designs created for brands are not standalone assets but rather part of a design system that needs to be versatile and scalable.

Feedback process that doesn’t tire you out

When you need a quick change to a marketing asset, how does the revision process actually look? With an AI tool, making edits sounds fast on paper but it quickly turns into a fragmented, cumbersome task.

Yes, the sophisticated text-to-image tools available today have simplified image editing. Some even let you create layered designs so you can adjust specific elements in the generated designs. But is it really that simple all the time?

The revised results are only as accurate as the prompt you give for editing the image. It’s a hit or miss. That does take a lot of back and forth and sitting through multiple updates, tweaking your prompt, wondering how better to describe the change to get the actual results.

Not to forget, even the paid plans in AI tools have limits. Sometimes they are based on credits and different tasks use up different numbers of credits. So you never know when you are going to reach the limit of generation and when that happens, you wait several hours or a whole day before your limit resets and take a shot at your design again.

Now, let’s compare this with the revision process when you are working with unlimited design services. As you know already, unlimited design services do not have any limits on the number of revisions. Now, that does not mean you are subject to endless revision loops.

You use the feedback tool, like the one on KIMP360, to submit your design revisions. The team works on the revision, and you have the revised files, sometimes in hours or sometimes the next day. It’s as simple as that.

AI in Design Workflows: FAQs

What is AI in design actually good for today?

AI is strongest at generating early-stage visuals, layout ideas, and fast variations of a concept. It reduces the time needed to explore directions but doesn’t replace structured design decisions. Most teams use it for ideation, not final production.

Will AI replace human designers?

AI can add value to design workflows but cannot replace skilled human designers. Because generating images is only one part of design. Real design includes understanding business goals, user behavior, consistency across systems, and making trade-offs between competing priorities. AI produces designs that look good but, but it doesn’t manage context or long-term coherence.

When AI can generate designs, are unlimited design services still worth it?

Unlimited design services solve the gap between generating design and turning it into something usable, consistent, and aligned with a business goal. AI can create assets quickly, but it doesn’t manage the ongoing need for refinement, variation control, and brand consistency across multiple campaigns and channels. So, for overall quality and consistency, unlimited design services are still worth it.

What role do unlimited design services play when teams already use AI tools?

They turn ideas into usable design systems. Many teams now use AI to explore directions, then rely on design services to refine, standardize, and prepare assets for real-world use. The service layer ensures outputs are not just visually interesting, but operationally consistent.

Build a Future-Proof, AI-Ready Design Workflow: With KIMP

AI image generators have not removed the need for designers but rather reinforced the real strength of experienced designers. Teams that decide to use AI to replace designers in their workflows are slowly switching back to professional design support but the types of designers or design services they are choosing to work with are changing. The criteria they use to compare their options are changing.

They do not need just any design team. They need AI-ready design teams that simplify the hybrid model. Not teams that resist AI or teams that rely fully on AI but teams that know how to make the most of both. Speed and convenience of AI, but the creative insights and experience of designers.
