Founder Stories: Lewis Vandervalk On Building Blue Crocus Solutions

In today’s Founder Story, we feature Lewis Vandervalk, Founder of Blue Crocus Solutions!

Read on for lessons he has learned from launching and marketing his business.

1. Please introduce your business and share your role.

Blue Crocus Solutions is a fast-growing marketing company based in New Brunswick, Canada. We serve junk removal, dumpster, and demolition clients all over North America with ROI-focused marketing efforts, including Branding, Web design, Google PPC, and SEO.

I am the Founder and CEO of the company, leading a diverse team from North and South America, Africa, and Asia. Our mission is to take care of our current and future clients. We are driven to help business owners hungry for education and clarity regarding marketing.

2. How did you prepare for, and go about your launch?

In 2019 when I was starting the business, I spent a great deal of time researching and talking to people who have successfully grown their businesses using online tactics. SEO techniques were clear winners among the many ideas I researched for lead generation.

I then spent countless hours and phone calls learning from the best lead generation and SEO experts in the industry who have had and continue to have terrific track records in performance over the past 10 years.

As far as marketing campaigns, social media has been our best source of leads so far, and as we do our own SEO on our website, it is catching up in terms of leads per month. What do I mean by social media? Facebook groups primarily. Jumping into the groups, giving value, helping people with marketing audits, and then getting tagged by current clients whenever a business is looking for someone to help with their marketing.

When we first started, we did a LOT of free marketing audits. Video audits go over a prospect’s SEO and digital presence, giving a ton of tips and then offering to help them. I also started a podcast and streamed the interviews live in the groups, which grew my know, like, and trust factor with the group and industry members.

3. Since launching, what types of marketing campaigns and designs have worked best to attract and retain customers?

Providing excellent customer service and going the extra mile is the best strategy for us. We continue to be very active in the Facebook groups, including being an admin of our own group, and an admin on a Facebook group of almost 30k members.

4. What have been the most influential brands for your business? Whose branding and marketing do you aspire to and why?

Hook Agency. Hite Digital. Dope Marketing. Lawnline Marketing. I follow the owners of each of these marketing agencies closely, have learned and continue to learn from them, and aspire to leave the impact that they have left in their corner of the world.

5. What are your favorite marketing platforms/tools?

Facebook has been the biggest platform we consistently use, specifically Facebook groups. Podcasting comes in a close second. We are starting to consistently blog as well and turn those blogs into lead magnets to draw in more traffic.

6. Looking ahead, what are you most excited about?

The future is looking bright for us at Blue Crocus Solutions. We have had 50% growth year over year, and this year promises to be no different. We are sponsoring and partnering with a CRM launching in February to serve the junk removal and home service community, and doing some really cool giveaways there that will surely leave a wave in the market.

At the end of the day, though, seeing clients succeed and sharing that growth with the team is what it’s all about.

7. Who or what inspires and motivates you?

My kids motivate me. My wife inspires me as she takes care of our 4 kids. The impact we are creating for our clients, employees, and the community continues to inspire me and help me push the team to be GREAT, not just average.

8. What are some lessons you’ve learned along the way that you would share with entrepreneurs hoping to launch or who have just launched?

Don’t be afraid to take risks. Fail forward. Each “failure” can be a great lesson. Mistakes teach you more than the good times. Imperfect action beats imperfect inaction. Get mentors.

9. What do you believe are the qualities of a good entrepreneur? And what makes a team successful?

As Elon Musk says, the ability to chew glass and stare into the abyss. Really though, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows; you need to be resilient and have a solid support system in place to help weather the ups and downs of business.

You need to be fearless and not let risk get in the way of the vision. If you know in your gut it’s the right move to make, make the move. Don’t ignore your gut. That leads to issues down the line.
